What is Gut Directed Hypnotherapy (GDH) and how does it help?
The gut-brain connection refers to the communication network linking the brain and the digestive system. We have all experienced that feeling of ‘butterflies’ in our tummy when we are excited or anxious about something or the ‘gut feeling’ when something or someone feels ‘off’. These messages are conveyed via the network of nerves that connect your brain and your gut; with IBS there is a disconnection between how your brain and gut are communicating with each other with the gut overreacting to the messages it is receiving from the brain.
GDH uses hypnosis and targeted hypnotic language to relax and reprogramme the connection making it less likely to overreact and trigger the symptoms of IBS.
GDH also helps to reduce the stress and anxiety associated with your symptoms and offers tools to help you feel in control. GDH is one of the interventions suggested by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE) for people with IBS.
Hypnotherapy is not a cure but can help to reduce symptoms and make them more manageable.
What are the Benefits of having Hypnotherapy for IBS?
1. Reduction in Symptoms
Hypnotherapy has been shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of IBS such as abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhoea. Many people experience a noticeable decrease in the severity of symptoms.
2. Stress and Anxiety Management
Stress and anxiety are known triggers for IBS symptoms. Hypnotherapy promotes relaxation and helps manage stress, which in turn can reduce symptom flare-ups. By helping clients respond more calmly tostress, hypnotherapy can interrupt the cycle of stress-induced IBS symptoms.
3. Supporting the Gut–Brain Connection
The gut-brain connection refers to the communication network linking the brain and the digestive system. IBS is now being more widely categorised as a disorder of the Gut-Brain connection with hypnotherapy now being viewed as a safe and effective treatment in gaining control of the condition and helping to reduce symptoms.
4. Long-Term Benefits
Studies indicate that the positive impact of hypnotherapy can last long after the sessions end, offering a sustained improvement in IBS symptoms. Many individuals continue to feel relief for months or even years, making it a potentially lasting treatment option.
5. Improved Quality of Life
IBS can impact negatively on an individual’s quality of life, limiting how they engage in day to day social and work activities. Through hypnotherapy they gain a range of techniques to manage their symptoms, thereby empowering them to self-manage their condition and limit potential symptom flare ups
6. Can hypnotherapy be used with other treatments for IBS?
Yes, because hypnotherapy is non-invasive and drug-free, it can be used with other treatments. It is important to discuss any existing health plan with your GP or other healthcare provider to ensure your best outcomes, however hypnotherapy is a safe complementary approach that can be used alongside other traditional methods.
