What is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy uses modern, practical, structured, and well-researched strategies to help people make significant, positive changes in their lives in a relatively short period of time. As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist, I focus on solutions, not on problems or past memories.
Hypnosis or ‘trance’ describes times when we experience a shift in our conscious awareness; it is a natural, relaxed and safe state, created using guided relaxation and visualisation techniques, where the mind can relax and focus on thoughts and suggestions that may be useful. We all experience trance many times a day – remember times when you have driven to work or home with no memory of the detail of your journey or been so engrossed in a book or a TV programme that you lost all track of time?
Hypnosis is not something that is ‘done’ to you, you do not lose control and the trance you experience during hypnotherapy is very different from what happens during ‘stage hypnosis’. We remain in control when we are in a trance state and can decide whether the information or suggestions that are offered are useful to us or not; we will not accept or do anything that is against our will or inappropriate and are able to return to full awareness at any time.
Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is different to other types of hypnotherapy in that it uses a specific structure, combining trance with an understanding of how the brain works. It is a collaborative process and works most effectively when the client is engaged and committed to change. It can be used to help all kinds of issues including stress, anxiety, confidence and self-esteem and can help people cope better with physical conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and some chronic pain conditions. Specific phobias such as fear of spiders, water, flying, and public speaking can also be minimised.
An initial consultation takes around 50 minutes, no hypnosis takes place during this session, however you will learn how the brain works and how this may influence how you deal with the issues you are experiencing. You will receive a free CD to listen to between sessions which will support the effectiveness of the hypnotherapy. Subsequent sessions take about I hour.
The number of sessions required will vary depending on the individual and the presenting issue; for most conditions like anxiety or stress 8 or more sessions are required. Phobias can generally be addressed in 4 sessions while Smoking Cessation is a single 2-hour session. Sessions will usually be weekly at the start of the therapy; the frequency can reduce to fortnightly or monthly as you feel ready.
I offer sessions in Belfast at Harmony Holistic Healing and Source Wellbeing Centre and at my home clinic Willow Therapies in Randalstown. I also work with clients via Skype and Zoom.
